The rest of her family lives out of state, but Bayes says her daughters, Cassidy, 14, and Kyle, 11, have been “grandfathered” into the Fayetteville community through the cafe They’re especially popular at Christmas time, when Bayes gives her children’s teachers a special gift

Bayes said it was important to get her customers’ opinion

But good food and a laid-back atmosphere isn’t the only way the Cathedral Cafe brings the Fayetteville community together

Every year, the restaurant holds a chili dinner with the Fayetteville United Methodist Church, the building’s original tenant The food is free, but the church collects donations for local charities

“It brings people together, people who normally wouldn’t be going to church go over there,” Bayes said

The cafe also donates money it raises from selling the used books that fill the dining room’s shelves

When Shingledecker first opened the restaurant, the Trillium Craft Company sold crafts, local books and used books in the building Bayes said the dining room “just did not look the same” after the store moved down the street and took the bookcases along
